Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus... Philippians 2:5

And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? The sower soweth the word.

Mark 4:11-14

Jesus reveals in this passage that this parable is the foundation for understanding the principles of God. Jesus asked the disciples that if they are having trouble understanding this parable then how can they possibly understand any other parable. The truth of the matter is that this parable reveals to us the problems in scripture retention or holding on to the Word of God.

Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.

Mark 4:3-4

Many people toss the Word of God aside because of disbelief and bitterness of heart. God's Word goes forth regardless of whether it is wanted or not. Yet sometimes it is due to neglect because of lack of discipline and interest. In this ground the enemy finds little resistance when he comes to steal it away.

And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

Mark 4:5-6

Even when the Word of God is received with joy and excitement, it can still be lost when the trials and troubles of life are increasingly demanding. We need the Word of God to penetrate more than just our thoughts and emotions but also our strength and will. We must take action to allow the Word ample depth in our hearts, mind, soul and strength. The preceeding study will give you some principles that will help to accomplish a greater grasp of the Word of God.
